On 4 December, at 6:00 pm, the São José Convent Cultural Centre in Lagoa hosted the presentation of the new book “(Re)interpretations of Female Conventual Heritage: Spaces, Memories and Reuses”, a cultural publication that has already sparked interest for the way it rethinks the historical and social heritage of female convents.

Edited by the Municipality of Lagoa, the book brings together 10 research articles exploring different perspectives on female conventual architecture, the memories associated with it, and contemporary challenges related to cultural valorisation. The publication emerged within the framework of the CONVENTUS Project – New perspectives on the building of the former Convent of São José, strengthening the dialogue between scientific research, local memory and cultural practices.

The presentation included an intervention by Professor José Aguiar, PhD (Faculty of Architecture, University of Lisbon), who highlighted the importance of this work for the understanding and safeguarding of architectural heritage, as well as presentations on the project’s objectives and first results by the book’s authors: Catarina Almeida Marado (CES-UC/FCHS-UAlg), Lorena Sancho Querol (CES-UC), María García Romero (EAT-UCLM) and Ismael Estevens Medeiros (Municipality of Lagoa).

An initiative that has already made its mark on Lagoa’s cultural community and invites everyone to look at heritage with fresh eyes.
